Kalen-ism for the day

Today while buckling Kal into his booster seat, I leaned over and kissed him. But he moved his head and I kissed his eye.  He wipes off my kiss and proceeds to tell me "You kissed my eye!" I reply "I'm sorry.  I just wanted to give you love."  Without pausing he says "Well, that was awkward!"

what's round on the ends and high in the middle?

O-hi-O!
Now, granted I am Ohio-born and bred.  I've never lived in another state.  I have visited other states and I can see the appeal of some places....to visit.  So some of you might find my opinion biased and that's okay....it's MY blog!
I love Ohio's weather.  I love the winter.  I love sweaters that cover your tush and boots, mittens and toboggans (the hat---not the sled).  I like watching the snow fall from the comfort of a warm living room.  I like sledding down hills and making snow angels.  I even don't mind ice now that we have a garage to park our cars.
I love the spring with rain and pretty flowers.  I love mid-March when those daffodils pop up out of the ground (sometimes still covered in snow).  I love thunderstorms, I really do.  I love the fresh smell after a rain when it feels like the whole world got a much needed shower.  I love rain boots and hoodies.  I love wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of capris.  I love wearing flip flops in the rain.
I love the summer where it's so hot that you HAVE to eat ice cream to survive!  I love shorts and t-shirts.  I love ponytails b/c it's too hot to wear your hair down.  I love late evening bike rides and porch swings.  I love not having to wear shoes!
I love the fall!  First off, it's my birthday!  I love the changing leaves and jumping in leaf piles.  I love soccer games and wearing ball hats.  I get to wear hoodies again.  I love that anticipation of school.  I love it not getting dark until 9pm.  I love bonfires and s'mores.
Yes, Ohio, I love you.  I understand you.  In a lot of ways, I'm just like you.  We can be cold when we aren't appreciated.  But we can also be sunshine, rainbows, spring rain, and pretty falling leaves.  Don't let the haters get you down. Chances are they are move ins who don't appreciate your complexity.  And let's be honest, who doesn't like the unexpected from time to time!

Izzy's baptism and some cute conversations

Isabel turned 8 years old last Sunday which meant she was old enough to be baptized.  We really try to talk to the kids and help them understand that baptism is a choice and it is a BIG event.  We were so excited to invite anyone and everyone she knows and although Izzy is pretty timid, I think she liked the attention and the idea of her special day.
She wore the same dress she wore as flower girl in Uncle Joe's wedding a few years back and she borrowed a dress from another little girl at church to actually be baptized in.  It is an adorable dress and I'm so thankful that they let us borrow it.  Kera Butler,  a sweet gal at church, did Izzy's hair so it stayed up the whole time and she wore her Elsa shoes that she got for her birthday.  We took a few pictures beforehand.

We were very excited with family and friends that came to her special day.  Sis. Floyd and Sis. Allison each participated in our portion of the program and I sang a song.  Later in the evening, Izzy was singing my song over and over and kept telling me "I really like that song Mom."  We had every single member of my family there which was monumental!  Kurtis' parents and two of his brothers with their families were there.  It was really just perfect.

Some cute comments that were made after the baptism.  We were discussing how many missionaries were at Izzy's day.  She had 8 there and I also had 8 at my baptism.  Kalen says "I'm only having 2 missionaries at my baptism and those are......the GIRLS!"  Apparently, he likes our Sister Missionaries.
At dinner, Aiden (age 4yo) is sitting next to me.  He is one of my music students and he says "You know what kid liked your song today?  I'm that kid!"  It was so sweet and made my day!

Zeke-ism

Zekey is way more interactive these days and I love it.  He has had a double ear infection lately and a nasty cough in his chest but he's so funny.
He calls shoes "ews".  Just take off the "sh".
He likes to eat something and then rub his tummy and say "mmmm, mmmm".
He likes to dance A LOT and he sings "Let it Go" (just that phrase) over and over.
He likes to take paper towel rolls, shoot them like gun and say "pew, pew".
His longest sentence to date was "Puppy poopy in your room come, come!"
He loves the dog, he loves his siblings, he loves his daddy and he loves his papaw.  He also loves to hug and when he starts giving out kisses, sit down b/c he will kiss you over and over again.

Kalen-ism for the day

I threw Kal's stuffed animal across the room and it landed in his lap.
He says "Mom, nice throw!"
I said "thank you."
He says "you forgot to say 'nice catch'."
I said "Oh, sorry, nice catch Kal."
He says "I know."
I love my kid!

big moments in everyday life

Today, while in the van, I had 2 moments that made me pause:
1. Sam is now too big for Happy Meals.  He now orders an adult combo meal.  He isn't little anymore.
2. Izzy and Sam yelled from the back seat "Hey Mom, are we patting the steady beat?"  They were pretty close and I had a moment where I realized that they are getting it and I'm so proud!

Momma ain't got time for that!

So December was fierce.  For three of the four weeks of Dec. at least half of the Eber household was facing some sort of ickiness.  Be it cold, cough, fever, diarrhea, or runny nose, we were a mess.  I think I missed more church in December than I did the entire rest of the year.  Poor Sam went to school one day with some diarrhea.  He had a choir concert that day and could not miss it!  But sure enough by 9am that morning, I got a call to come pick him up.  As I picked him up from school, he sobbed to the principal that he would miss his choir concert.  Poor Ms. Petty just tried to encourage him and tell him that there would be other concerts.
The week before Christmas, Kurtis had to go to D.C. for a week.  I was not happy with the timing (to say the least). And of course, the day after he left, we found out Zeke had the Flu A strain.  I had to sit on him to get his medicine in him and the tamiflu gave him massive diarrhea diapers.  It was just the month of poop at our house!
Thankfully, everyone was healthy for Christmas and we had a great holiday.  The kids got at least one thing that they asked for and we just had a nice time with family.  We did celebrate with my family on Christmas Day and I have to say it was a lot for the littles.  It is so hard for them to have Christmas morning from Santa and then extended family Christmas.  They were a little over-stimulated with everything and 3 of the 4 had meltdowns by the evening.  Still, it was (and always seems to be) the best part of Christmas seeing them excited and happy and enjoying their toys.
January started fairly calm and I had high hopes for the beginning of 2015.  But my cough from Dec came back....with a vengeance.  After 10 days of coughing to the point of being unable to breathe and my chest/back/sides hurt, I went back to the dr. to be told: pneumonia.  I've never had pneumonia!  I tend to get the little bugs that fly around every few years but this is crazy!  I literally cough until I can't breathe, my sides and back feel on fire and I'm e-xhau-STED!  I have very little energy and sometimes I breathe heavy after folding the laundry!  Worst still, the dr said it would take 4-6 weeks before I would feel back to normal!  Now, asking a lady with 4 kids to rest as much as possible is laughable at best but it's more that February is busy.  Next week I have 4 classroom Valentine's Day parties to attend, including being the Planner for Izzy's class party.  I also have Izzy's birthday party, her baptism, and the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet all within 8 days of each other.  Sure, I can do this.
Now all this long explanation of the last few months and crazy scheduling amid sickness and you're probably thinking "geez Greta, let's hear something positive".  Well, here is comes.
This sickness has been perfectly timed.  It can at a moment where I actually had two weeks off of my toddler music class so I could rest.  It came when my folks could help pick kids up from school so I didn't have to go out much.  It came at a time where we actually had very little planned during the last two weekends so Kurtis could manage kids and house while I sleep on the weekends.  It came at a time where I wasn't afraid to ask for help and able to get some dinners brought in for us.  Granted, our anniversary dinner was cancelled but we can reschedule.  I missed the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby but Kurtis was able to take the kids and the parent in charge of the Derby was actually one of the moms who takes charge and plans all of it anyway.  It was easy for me to duck out and rest and she was all ready to take charge.  I've seen the little blessings along the way.  I've managed to see through the fog and see the silver lining.  I've really been aware of how I do matter and this is just a way for me to take care of myself.
I don't have time for sickness; I've got kids/house/husband to raise.   I don't have time for rest; I've got a loooooooong to do list.  I don't really have an afternoon to take time off; I've got a lot of Cub Scout things going on.  But I also have a lot of friends  who want to help. I have a husband who loves me and wants to take care of me the way I take care of him. I have kids who try (in their own way) to be helpful and want Mommy to feel better.  I have so much more than just time.
