Kalen starts talking

last night right before the kids went to bed, we all climbed up on the couch together. I made the comment "oh, we're all on the couch together: Mom, Dad, Sam, Izzy, Kalen and Baby" Kalen jumps up and starts screaming "There is NO BABY! NO BABY!" It's the first time he's ever said such a long sentence and ever acknowledged a baby! We were laughing so hard about two hours later; we just kept talking about it:)

Emotional rollercoasters anyone?

So June was not the best month for me....I found myself often asking "am I really ready for this?"  And it wasn't always in reference to the little bundle of joy in my belly.  Throughout the past month I ended up "spotting" a few days and ended running back and forth to the doctor about every two weeks just to check the baby's heartbeat.  Add that to two pediatrician appts (one routine check-up for Sam and one sick visit for Isabel) and taking Isabel to the lab to have 5 vials of blood drawn (not fun for anyone involved!).  And I end up dragging around three active children to various places, all while on "limited activity" from my OB.  And on the days when I'm not taking them on mandatory appointments, we were confined to the house because I was afraid of doing too much.  Often with the kids destroying the house and me not having any interest/energy to clean, I would say "Greta, are you really ready for this?"  Am I really ready to give of myself every single day often with little gratitude or sympathy?  I know, right?  It's a little late to be asking yourself this:)
Then last week, after a great visit to the Indy Children's Museum, we came home to no electricity.  It was tough getting everyone to bed that night but we survived and the electric came back on that night.  Not too rough.....until two days later, the second wind storm blew through and knocked out our power for 24 hrs in 90 degree heat.  Oh, and the kids and I watched our swingset get picked up by the wind and blown into the neighbor's fence (can you say traumatizing?)!  But hey, count your blessings, right?  At least it was the swingset and a fence as opposed to our house and anything else!  Still after having three young children in the house with no electricity, I ask "are you really ready for this?"
And the truth is that I don't think I am ever ready for this!  We never know what challenges we'll face and what we view as challenges, others might feel are simply adventures!  Life is not predictable.  I can never be prepared for everything!  I sure can try but honestly, anyone who says they are prepared for motherhood is delusional (and she may have been driven mad by her children).  I'm scared to death to add one more child to this mix that I call home BUT I will do it! Why?  Because I will never be ready for this but at least I'm giving it my best.  And when my kids are older, they will laugh at their mom but they will know that she loved them through any and all circumstances! And that's what it's really about!  When you're old and a little bit batty, your kids and grandkids will say "Mom lost her mind a long time ago but she's always had her big heart!"  At least I hope that's what they'll say!  Either way I guess this emotional rollercoaster that I've been on this past month is okay b/c rollercoasters are fun, right?  Well, I'll keep telling myself that anyway.........

just a few things

So I've been terrible at keeping up with posts lately but I wanted to just jot down a few things we've done in June.  With the children being out of school, my mom and I have been trying to take my nephews (Kris, 14 and Tom, 11) and my three kids to something fun each week.
The first week out of June, we went to the free Monday movie which was "Cats and Dogs".  Sam and the older boys have seen it before but this is at the movie theater so we thought it would be fun. It was also Kalen's first time in a movie theater.  He was hilarious!  As soon as the screen came to life, he was in awe of this HUGE TV!  We had a great time!
The next week, we went to my Great Aunt Fern's house and had a picnic in her backyard.  Sam thought it was really cool that she had a picnic table in her backyard and it had an umbrella that you could open and close!  She really enjoyed the visit though I was worried that the children weren't well enough behaved.  I think that's part of being a mom though.
Later that week, Kurtis and I decided to take the kids to the Huber Height Splash Pad (where there is a water feature that shoots water all over the place).  At first Kalen and Isabel were both a little unsure but after a few minutes, Kalen was crazy about it and loved it.  We picked a perfect day to do it b/c not many people were there and it wasn't too hot. Plus it's free!  We then had lunch out at McDonald's.  On the way home we noticed that there was a Safety Day at a local women's shelter.  We stopped to see the fire engines, ambulance, and Sheriff's cruiser.  But the highlight was the Care Flight helicopter.  Sam got to try on a fireman's boots and pants with suspenders and climb up in the helicopter.  As we were leaving, they announced that Care Flight would be taking off in ten minutes so we stuck around.  Sure enough, we got to see the helicopter take off right in front of us.  Sam's immortal words: "That was so cool; I almost peed my pants!"  I have to agree that it was very cool!
Last week, Mom and I took Kris, Sam, Izzy and Kalen for free bowling.  We were the only ones there which was super nice.  The kids had a great time and Kalen is very into bowling.  He loved carrying the ball up to the ramp, setting it up just right, and pushing it off the ramp.  He even would cheer for himself when the ball hit some pins.  He was hilarious and even bowled four spares!  Sam was very jealous and was so upset that he did not get any spares.  But on his very last turn, he managed to get a spare. It made his entire day.  Isabel was just excited to have a pink ball!  We didn't tell them scores at the end but Kalen ended up having the best score on the last game.  It was super fun.
I can only imagine what we'll do in July!

more Kalen speak

Though he is still a long way from regular conversation, Kalen has added a few words to his vocabulary. My favorite is the fire truck!

Isabel = "Sissy"
Aunt Tara = "Tata"
Uncle Joe = "Joe!"
Fire truck = "woo-woo car"
Papaw = "Ma" (Papaw's not really fond of that nickname)
When waking up from his nap he greets me with "Hi Mom!"
Outside = "Out!"
Our Van = "Out Car!"
There it is = "I See!"
Donut = "nut"

Sam is still "Say" and Floyd is still "Dog".  He's really good at saying "car" and "truck" and "look!"

The Fresh Beat Band members (a tv show on Nickolodeon) are all "Kiki" and "Shout" which in Kalen's defense, is the name of two of the members, just not the other two:)

He is a constant happiness for our family. He is full of more energy than any of us combined and I'm constantly exhausted but oh, what a dollbaby he is!  I just don't think I could enjoy life nearly as much without my Kal!

things the kids say

coversation from the back of the van:
Izzy:"what do you call a baby deer?" Dad:"a fawn"
Sam: "what do yu call a baby horse?" Mom: "a foal"
Sam: "what do you call a baby eagle?" Mom: "an eaglet, I think" Dad:"that can't be right.
Sam "why don't you 'giggle' it?" he meant "google"

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sam and Izzy are going to Vacation Bible School with their Aunt Tara tonight....
Sam says "what's VBS like?" (they went last year)
Isabel "it's like our church only more fun!"
I had to laugh:)

Sam names the baby

For fun the other day, I asked Sammy what he would like to name the baby.
For a boy he picked "Sammy 2" and for a girl he picked "Sexy".
I explained to him that Daddy probably won't like either of those names.  But Sam insists it has to be a name that begins with S.  His current favorite song is "I'm Sexy and I Know It" and when he asked me what sexy meant I told him it meant "very good looking" so his name for a girl is pretty innocent.
But hilarious at the same time.
Needless to say, we will not being using either of Sam's names!

biggest scare of my life

I made a  very serious error last week when I assumed that since this was my fourth pregnancy I should be an expert at it.  Obviously, I know all the tricks of the trade and all the ins-and-outs.  But really, every pregnancy is different and I was quickly reminded to not take this one for granted.  Last week was Memorial Day and we had a family picnic.  Sam had his last two days of school and then we had a 3-day garage sale where I was on my feet alot of the time.  Sunday morning brought a bouncy Primary Singing Time where the kids and I kept jumping up and down to different words in the songs.  Just a typical week around the Eber house.  Until I woke up early on Monday morning with a feeling that something wasn't right.
I woke up at 5:30 and rushed to the bathroom to discover that I'd bled quite a bit.  I think poor Kurtis had a heart attack as I began screaming for him and crying.  We called my Dr. on call and he told us to go to the ER and get checked out.  All I could think was "what will I tell the kids if we've lost the baby!?"  We thankfully got into the Er fairly quickly and had a pelvic exam done.  I will say that the ER was not the best prepared for pregnant women.  I felt like they were treating me for a miscarriage before we were certain that I had had one.  The pelvic exam showed that the bleeding had stopped (which was good), the blood was all mine (which was good),  the cervix was still closed (which was good) and there was no tissue in the blood (also good).  We were able to hear a strong fetal heartbeat and were sent home with hope.  Though I was told to "take it easy" for a few weeks.  I won't say that I felt the most confident b/c they made it sound as though a miscarriage could still occur at any moment and so I was very fearful to even move too much.  I was able to see my OB on Wed and he made me feel much better.  He still did not do an ultrasound b/c he felt it was unnecessary.  He said the heartbeat was steady and strong and went on to say "well, I feel better."  I cried in relief when I heard that steady little thumping and knew that Bitty Baby was safe.  He told me that the risk of miscarriage at this stage (14 weeks) was 1% which was way better odds than the ER's doctors.  He still told me to take it easy for a few weeks but told me that what had happened was not uncommon.  Supposedly the placenta pulled away from the wall just a bit and caused some bleeding. Should any more bleeding occur than I need to see him as soon as possible.  But he was hopeful things were okay.  Kurtis and I both felt relief after seeing the doctor.
I've been truly blessed from the outpouring of love from people.  I did post what happened on Facebook so people would be aware of our situation and was so blessed with so much love and many prayers.  By Monday night, I had received a blessing from Kurtis and Jeremy Lutz and Jeremy called me on Wed on his lunch break to see how I was feeling.  Numerous people offered to bring dinner or come take the kids.  My dad came and vacuumed and mopped all my floors.  My mom watched the children for me so we could go to the ER and the OB on Wed.  I've had more than one "mom" tell me still down and take it easy.  I'm so honored and thankful for a Father in Heaven who watches over me and my baby.  I so thankful that my little one is still with me and pray that I can do everything possible to make it a safe journey for the rest of this pregnancy. I have the most amazing husband who holds me when I cry, helps to keep going when I want to give up, and loves me in my "beyond reasonable moments".  I'm so thankful for friends and family and friends that act as family when I need them.  I've learned that you can take nothing for granted, never think you have it figured out, and yes, those little things inside us are little beloved people that need to be cared for as soon as they are conceived.  I truly hope I can be the mother I need to be to all of my little ones!
